Benzoyl Peroxide Use in Acne Products
Benzoyl peroxide is a very popular ingredient used in treating acne. It is one of the best ingredients that reduces blackhead and pimples available on the market.
It is essential that it is used correctly so that it prevents the build up of dead skin cells, acne bacteria, excess sebum (oil), pimples and blackheads. It is both highly effective in treating all grades of acne in non-inflamed and inflamed. It is often used incorrectly and many people think that it just doesn't work for them.
Don't worry if you have tried it before, keep reading. There is lots of great information here and you are sure to learn more.
Products containing benzoyl peroxide (BPO) are often very affordable and it really is probably your best choice because it works fast, you don't need a prescription and it works on all types of acne conditions. When you are fighting acne, BPO should be at the top of your list. Here is how you can make this effective ingredient work for YOU:
1. You need the right KIND of Benzoyl Peroxide for YOUR skin.
Not all BPO's are created equal. Some are too strong for you skin and some are too week. BPO can be irritating but sometimes that is part of the process. It's side effects include itching, swelling, peeling and redness. But don't let this scare you. Your skin is highly adaptable and you will get used to it over time. Your BPO actually needs to cause mild peeling within the pores to effectively treat it. But we want this to happen without it burning your skin or becoming too sensitive or painful.
2. You need to understand what BPO is and how it works.
Benzoyl Peroxide is a white or off-white needle shaped water-soluble crystalline powder that offers the following benefits for blemished and impure skin:
It peels skin similar to salicylic or resorcinol reducing blockages.
It kills the bacterium Porpionibacterium acnes (P.acnes)
It has inflammatory properties reducing pain and discomfort associated with many lesions.
It eliminates fatty acids/oils in the skin.
3. Expect to be a little dry!
Benzoyl Peroxide can be extremely irritating and drying. During the initial weeks, you will experience some dryness, redness, itching, flaking, tightness or mild peeling. This is temporary and will subside as your skin adapts to the product. You'll have to tough it out with some peeling and it will eventually go away; but if you get “uncomfortably dry”, then let us know at the spa. Those that can put up with being a bit dry, will clear up faster!!!!
4. Follow your directions.
When you see one of our estheticians at Vanilla Sugar, you will be given directions on HOW to use the products. Please follow them because if you don't, your skin won't be able to clear up. This is essential to clearing up! Use it as directed and religiously for results. When you skip, your skin has the chance for acne to form.
5. Know where to apply and avoid.
Avoid using products on the eye and neck area. This tissue is very delicate and can irritate the skin way too much so don't apply any BPO to this area. Also, do not apply any eye cream or moisturizer around the eyes. The BPO will not be able to penetrate and it can also cause irritation and swelling. Avoid the smile lines as this is also a delicate area. Don't use while working out. The sweat will irritate your skin. Avoid the sun, this causes natural inflammation in the skin and should be avoided all the time. Wear a sunscreen (SPF) if you'll be in the sun for long periods of time.
6. BPO will bleach fabric.
Any products with BPO in it, will most often bleach fabrics. We suggest wearing white clothes when you are using the products. We also recommend using a white pillow case and a white wash cloth or a cloth you don't mind that will get bleached. Be sure to cleanse your hands after applying and removing the BPO so you don't accidentally bleach any of your favorite fabrics.
7. Be mindful of allergic reactions.
Anything is possible and although it is very rare, an allergic reaction may occur. Dry skin is NOT an allergic reaction. This is normal. An allergic reaction is usually itching, burning, swelling or a rash that looks similar to poison ivy. If you experience any of this, please stop using your products and contact us at the spa immediately. We have an alternative treatment that still helps to get you clear.
